How I Obtained Nearly 1,000 College T-shirts
If you’ve known me for more than a few years, you’ve heard my college T-shirt story. It’s one of my go-to stories whenever I’m in a “tell me something interesting about yourself” situation. If they’re still not impressed, I then throw out the fact that I have zero cavities, or perhaps more impressively, that I haven’t thrown up in over 20 years. A Seinfeld-esque streak which I hope to maintain for 20 more.
It started in high school. One of my history teachers would always put together these classroom games in which the winners would get to pick from a box of random prizes. The prize box contained all kinds of stuff: mugs, pens, pennants, and even T-shirts. I noticed that most of the items in the prize box had college logos on them, so out of curiosity, I asked him where he got all his loot. His method was shockingly simple: he’d occasionally e-mail random colleges asking them to donate items for his classroom. He gave me a website which listed the admissions e-mail addresses of all the top colleges in the nation. I jotted down the URL and couldn’t wait to get home and give it a try.
I got home and took a gander at the list of schools. It was massive. 1,700 to be exact. However, I quickly made up my mind: over the course of the next several weeks, I was going to e-mail every last school on that list and request a free T-shirt. And damn it, I did.
Now, I need to set the stage a little bit here. Keep in mind that this little experiment took place in the summer of 2003. DSL internet existed at the time, but unfortunately, my parents were still on dial-up. And not that fancy-schmancy AOL service, either. Nope, our internet service provider was Walmart Connect. Walmart Connect? Yes, Walmart used to have its own dial-up service and it was called Walmart Connect. My e-mail address was jrice80@wmconnect.com. Embarrassing, right? Anyway, the internet speed was clearly going to be a major hurdle.
As I pondered how I wanted to go about tackling this gargantuan task, I wanted to do whatever it took to get the best results. I wasn’t interested in pens and mugs. I wanted T-shirts, and lots of them. Sending out requests for free shirts in a massive bulk e-mail was not going to fly, as I figured it would look too spammy. These requests needed to be personalized and sent individually. I drafted up the body of the e-mail in Word, basically saying how I was a prospective college student who wanted to gather a few shirts and wear them around to promote their school. I included my mailing address and noted my shirt size.
- Open a “new e-mail” window.
- Type “Hello” as the subject.
- Navigate to the database, click the name of the school, find the admissions e-mail address and copy/paste it into the “To” field of the e-mail.
- Copy/paste the body from Word into the e-mail.
- Navigate back to the database, copy the name of the school, and paste it in the greeting above the body (e.g., Dear Abilene Christian University:)
- Press Send.
- Repeat.
I listed the above steps to give you an idea as to how long this process actually took. Each step seems minuscule, but when you’re working on a dinosaur of a PC with each webpage click taking 10+ seconds to render, it really adds up. I would usually sit down and just hammer them out in stages, typically at a clip of about 60 E.P.H. (e-mails per hour). You could really get into a rhythm, but let me tell you, it was absolutely grueling. You’d have a nice pace going, and then all of the sudden, your brain would just completely forget how to press CTRL + C, CTRL + V, etc. You’d have to stop, regain focus, and try again. It was an absolutely mind-numbing process.
About two weeks into the project, my hard work started to pay off: the shirts were starting to roll in. It started off slow–maybe a shirt or two a day. But one day, it just exploded. I don’t know if all colleges coincidentally chose the same day to start mailing out their crap, but all of the sudden I got about a dozen shirts in one day. The next day, 15. The next, 20. Shirts were coming in faster than I could unpackage them. Our mail lady was pissed. Our driveway was a mile long, and every day for an entire summer, she’d have to drive all the way to our front doorstep and unload armfuls of packages and boxes. But for me, every day was like Christmas morning!
You wouldn’t believe the postage cost on some of these boxes (anywhere from $5 to $15 apiece). My best haul came from Emmanuel College. They sent me a box of ten T-shirts. But these weren’t just any shirts. These things looked like they had been taken right off the shelves of their college bookstore. Very high quality. They were neatly wrapped and still had tags on them, priced at $10 each. What a haul. Emmanuel College was my Moby Dick.
The majority of the schools that sent me shirts were ones that you’ve never heard of. But that’s part of what made it fun. Whenever I’d wear one, people would ask, “Where the heck is that school?” My answer was usually, “I have no idea.” However, there were quite a few big schools that sent me shirts. Some of the bigger schools from memory were Notre Dame, Syracuse, Ohio State, BYU, Michigan State, Utah, Marquette, Indiana, and Pepperdine.
But it wasn’t just T-shirts. Even though I only requested shirts, some schools would also send all kinds of random college paraphernalia: pens, pads of paper, mouse pads, stress balls, pennants, sweatshirts, long sleeve Ts, hats, mints, calculators, key chains, water bottles, even rain ponchos! It was glorious.
That was a magical summer. I’m not kidding, every day for 3 months, something would come in the mail. I had hundreds of shirts: all different colors/designs, and all really unique.
A few more random thoughts before I wrap this post up:
- Many, many other people tried this after seeing/hearing how much success I was having. Every person that I know who tried it enjoyed some type of success. But very few, if any, had the drive (or free time?) to make it through all 1,700 schools on that list.
- People that I didn’t even know heard my story through other people and gave it a try for themselves. I was known as “the T-shirt guy”.
- When a friend or family member would give it a try, sometimes the person in admissions would recognize the city/state in their mailing address and reply back with “Are you the same guy who requested a shirt a couple months ago?”
- When the University of Utah replied to my request, they agreed to send me a shirt, but on one condition: I had to take a picture of myself wearing it and send it back to them. They put me on their website! Pretty cool. It was a really nice shirt, too. Nike, I believe.
- These shirts pretty much made up my entire wardrobe throughout the rest of high school and all through college. Chilly out? No problem. I’ll just throw on this comfy St. Thomas Aquinas College sweatshirt. Chance of rain? Piece of cake. Just let me grab my Point Loma Nazarene University rain poncho.
- On many, many occasions, I’d be wearing a shirt in public and would get stopped by someone. “Whoa, you went to Loras College?! I was an ’87 grad! Go Duhawks!!!” They were disappointed to hear that I only obtained the shirt as part of an elaborate e-mail scheme.
- I went through the list a second time a couple years later, but only made it about halfway through. A year after that, I went through the list again and made it all the way. Over the course of all three attempts, I’d say I sent about 4,000 total e-mails.
- All in all, I would guess that I probably got between 800-900 T-shirts. I gave most of them away to friends and family. Gave some to Goodwill. Kept my favorites. I still have probably 40-50 of them.
Will I ever try it again? No, probably not. It was extremely time consuming. But what makes a future attempt even more prohibitive is the fact that U.S. News & World Report appears to have changed the layout of their online list of colleges. You used to be able to click on the name of the school and the admissions e-mail address would be front and center. I looked around on their current site, but I couldn’t find any admissions e-mails. There may be other lists out there, but there is absolutely no way you could do this without a really quick way to access a mass list of college e-mail addresses. Having to navigate through pages and pages to find each one would be impossible.
If this little T-shirt project taught me anything, it’s this: sometimes, all you have to do is ask.
Awesome and very enjoyable read. I’m impressed that you linked to a specific point in the YouTube video (not many either know how to or take the time). I’m kind of irked that we didn’t get to see a pic at the end of a layout of all the shirts you received. Heck, even google a picture of a bunch of t-shirts in a pile. Can’t really blame you for not posting one thought. After all, I didn’t ask.
Here’s a pic of many of the shirts I still have. This was taken a few years ago. I really wish I would have gotten a pic of all of them. I gave many away as I got them, so there was never a point where I had all 900 shirts in my possession. Would have made for an epic pic.

Hello,
Could you tell me the name of the big schools you got free t-shirts from.
Thanks
Syracuse, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Pepperdine, Michigan State, and Indiana were the biggest.
Hi, I tried this as well and was successful. Did you email back thanking the college for sending stuff? Some schools have been really generous and I was wondering if anyone else wrote a thank you email.
Hey, did they reply wiith an email, or did they just send it to you? did you get a lot of rejections?
our mail carrier still punishes us on a weekly basis: i.e. jams, crams, stuffs until the box won’t shut, only to come home finding our personal mail flying all over the road….but we still smile about the good ole T-Shirt days!
so what exactly, word for word what did you say?
Word for word? This post wasn’t enough?
it was, for some reason i do better when i see examples.
I just happened to accidentally find your story and I must say it was both entertaining and impressive! I wanted to comment that I haven’t thrown up in over 20 years either… and you are absolutely right, it makes a great “tell me something about yourself” story!!
Thanks for reading! And I hope your streak stays alive. Mine is still intact as well. Here’s to another 20 years!
Bring it on!!!
I happen to see this story and it is awesome Can you tell me exactly what the email say because I am trying to do the same thing and where you out of school or in college how old was you
can you explain how to get them? well not all of them but i do want to gt some shirts. what do i do?
Do you think that you could post one of the letters you sent?
Hey Tyler, I came across your post searching for free college t-shirts. I’m considering trying this, but i was interested in knowing how you asked. I assume you didn’t just say Hey can i have a free shirt. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
Hey, This is Bob and I wonder have you start doing this project yet and what do your email say and how many shirts have you receive
What college did you end up going to?
Ball State University. Go Cardinals!
i hope ball state was one of the schools you got a t-shirt from
What was the layout of your email. I want to attempt this but I’m not sure how to word the email initially asking for the merchandise
Hello! If possible, could you please post some direct links to free shirt sign ups? I can’t find any..,Rather than actually emailing the schools for shirts? Thank you!
Huh? A free T-shirt sign-up? That doesn’t exist. Did you even read my post?
I did! And it was a great article! But nowadays, rather than emailing colleges for shirts, many have online sign-ups, simply requiring your email, name, address, and a few other pieces of information. I have tried this a few times with success. I know colleges like Colombia College in South Carolina do and was wondering if you had any direct links to such sign-ups. Thank you for your time! And sorry for the confusion!
Interesting. I didn’t know that they did that. Definitely didn’t see anything like that when I was doing it. I did it one painstaking email at a time! Worth it though. Still have a ton of shirts.
Lol, I see…Thank you! Sorry for the misunderstanding! 😀 I’ve got to try this the email way sometime!
Awesome post! Thanks a lot! =)
So I just email the college and they will send me a free shirt? Do you have the list of colleges still?
I just got one from Fairfield University
What did you say in your e-mail to them?
Ooh! Sounds cool! Did you ever get any shirts from schools in Minnesota?
No, I don’t believe so. I definitely sent them an e-mail, though. Give it a try!
Yeah, I was trying that, I can’t even find an admission email lol. Guess I’ll just keep looking.
Hey I gave it a try and now I’m getting an average of 5 college T-shirts a day in the mail plus random stuff. Just letting everyone know that Otis College of Art and Design will most definitely send you one if you ask. My friends all tried it. I love their black T-shirt. Thanks for the post!
That’s awesome!
I know it’s 2014, but I thought there’s no harm in asking if you still have the list and could send it to me at katelyn4simons@yahoo.com. Thanks! It’s greatly appreciated 🙂

Great post Tyler! Now Apa, I have been trying to get college emails but I’m studying hard in highschool. I admire the fact that you took time to get all the emails down and was wondering if you could send me your list. I just don’t have time, but if you sent me the list I would be happy to send you many of the shirts I get. Heres my email: louis.alpert@gmail.com and thanks so much again.
Did you get the list from apa?
Can you please send it to me if you still have it vanemarie08@gmail.com

Hi. Can you send me the list if you still have it. my email address is kapilpatel1226@gmail.com
How many t shirts did you obtain for Canada?
Do you have the website with the list of colleges & email addresses?
I emailed both emmanuel and st Thomas just like you did and they told me that unfortunately they couldn’t send me a free t shirt.
Did they reply with whether or not they would send one? Or do they just send it?
Sometimes they do, most times they just send something.
Just started my trek through all the schools. I’m determined to break your record.
Best of luck!
How Fast did they send a shirt after you started sending emails
Some within one week.
Ok thanks and should i tell the school im interested in them or just say i want to represent them
Dude, if this college T-shirt thesis I wrote here doesn’t give you what you need, I can’t help you.
I’m starting this venture now. It will be a SLOW work in progress. I plan on creating a website (blog style) to feature the shirts & schools. I enjoy advertising & promoting anyways, so this will be fun.
Hey….so if you could maybe unlink Point Loma Nazarene University…we’re tired of getting “hey, could you send me a free t-shirt, even though I don’t know who you are…because someone else got one…” emails. Much appreciated. Enjoy that poncho!
Hi Shannon, I’ve broken the PLNU link. Sorry for flooding your inbox! You guys put out an A+ poncho.
Not a prob–glad to be of service and nice work on clearly writing such a popular post.
Thanks so much!
Thank you. Just out of curiosity: how many e-mails would you say you’ve gotten?
For some reason, we’ve gotten more this fall than ever! We had one or two every few months up until this fall, when I’d say we’ve received at least 40 since October…and for a lil’ school like us, that’s plenty. 🙂
Understandably so. Hopefully this will slow things down!
Honestly, it’s pretty funny. We couldn’t figure out where it was all coming from, so it’s good to finally know!
Web designing or website designing is one of 90, 000 civilian
Defense Department employees. You can’t really escape the connotation that the rich are better than the poor. Here, I also jot down the centers for each day and the order in which each group of students based on their mental capacities or capabilities. In-college dorm list debates do not just teach public speaking skills; you also develop critical thinking; research skills and organisation and prioritisation of information. In addition, you are not playing well.
Hi! I really enjoyed this post very much:) I was just wondering if you can tell me the name of that website that you got the emails from? Thanks so much!
I believe this is the website he used, though, as he said, it’s been updated and is now harder to use.
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/sitemap#a
Since the end of ’09, maybe you can run right away, and this despite the loss of 2, 48, 168 REC s were issued – the highest so far. By the end of the quarter. If you want to know ahead of time if your future spouse isn’t really interested in joint custody, they can always opt
for a traditional license.
So these colleges never ended up billing you or sending fliers from their college for anything they sent you?
No, I was never billed anything. All completely free swag. Sometimes they’d send informational packets about their school, but all free.
Got one from Valporaiso, Bradley University, I even tried some sports teams and it worked, thanks!
Christopher – if you dont mind me asking, what kinds/types of sports teams? They would fit in well with the project that I’ll be starting this fall.
Well, The Boston Celtics, The Detroit Tigers, The Houston Texans, New England Revolution, Washington Wizards, Chicago Cubs, Miami Marlins, and the Atlanta Braves.
Christopher,
Thanks so much for responding (just now saw that you did). I wasn’t expecting you to answer with the teams you did – I was figuring on minor league or local teams. Good luck with your project.
Thanks again!
FYI, the Buffalo Sabres sent me a T-shirt, along with the Philadelphia Flyers, and Arizona Christian University…
Christopher,
Can you send me an email at southerlandpromotions@gmail.com ? I have another question, but I don’t want to ask it here on this thread. If not, I understand.
Yeah I will, but wait, are you the Tennessee TTM guy from youtube, i used to be obsessed with TTMing, and you were the guy I always watched
Hi if you don’t mind could you please email me at mrb3417@sbcglobal.net. Thanks!!
what email did you send to the sports team to receive the t-shirts how did it go
If you don’t mind I was wondering who you contacted when emailing the sports teams?
Sorry to ask but what exactly do you say to these teams or colleges in order to get them to give you free stuff?
So far I’ve sent about 50 emails and about 20 colleges don’t give out tshirts. I have shitty luck. Cool story though.
I’ve just received a pennant from Swarthmore College! No t-shirts so far…
I’ve been doing this for the past two weeks and have just started getting stuff in the mail. it really is like Christmas every day the mailman visits 🙂
If anyone on here would like to swap lists (not email addresses) of the schools you have gotten t shirts from, email me at southerlandpromotions@gmail.com
I have a list already written up of who I’ve received shirts from. This would help me on the advertising/promoting project I’m working on.
Thanks!
I’ve been successful with Pepperdine, and Point Loma Nazarene! And University of Portland!
Thanks Erica!
Just wondering, did you include your mailing address in the email you sent them?
Yep. Gave them everything they needed up front.
What were the schools that sent you sweatshirts?
I have enjoyed your blog. I started my own quest of shirts on july 3rd received my first shirt july 9Th from Graceland University.
So far I’ve gotten a shirt from: University of Colorado-Denver, University of Portland (they sent me a flag too), Benedictine University, Pepperdine University, Utah State University, Columbia College, and a lanyard from Illinois State University.
Thanks! I got a T-shirt from augustana college in Illinois and another T-shirt from Dakota State University so far.
Just got one from Georgia College.
Have you gotten one from Virginia Tech , Embry Riddle, or Washington State ?
You are such an inspiration to me LOL
Did you give them your address too in the email ?
He gave them everything upfront 🙂
Im soooo doing this!
All this interest is sad to see. College tuition rates are rising by 6-7% per year–double the rate of inflation–and these requests are adding unnecessary costs for colleges. So do you want to pay even more for tuition??? It’s already expensive and out of reach for a growing number of families. I work at a college, and we receive 10+ bogus requests like this per week. We now check our prospective student database to see if someone is truly interested in the school. Please stop trying to scam colleges for a $5 t-shirt and drive up costs as a byproduct. There are appropriate ways to learn about colleges. It’s unfathomable to see that some high school counselors are supporting these efforts!
you mad ahahaha
It’s the college’s choice on whether or not they actually give us the shirts or not. If you don’t want to, then just tell us that you can’t give us any.
Yes x1,000,000!
wow seems like someone is a bit lazy in doing her job….
Do You get replies back saying they will send you a shirt? or not?
sometimes they do, but they usually just send it
If any one has a list of the admission emails could you please send it too me I cant find them. Or could you tell me how to find them?? Most of the merchandise will be going to the kids who live at the GVCM orphanage in Haiti. I’m so excited to see if this will work out!!!
Thanks and God bless!!!!:)
Either click on an admissions tab and look for it on the admissions page or click the “contact us” and find it there
Hey! great post, i now have an obsession with collecting free shirts! So far the only ones I have gotten are by signing up online. I was wondering about how long was the “body” of the email? What other points did bring up besides saying that you were looking to do free advertising for them?
Nice! Just a few paragraphs. Didn’t really give any other angle aside from a fun project of collecting shirts.
Could you send me some of the colleges emails you used?! erin.m1313@gmail.com
Hi if you got this list can you send it to
Lauren@sonnyclark.com
Signing up online..? What do you mean. If you don’t mind, Can you tell which universities allow to sign up for t-shirts.?
Naropa University sent me a pair of T shirts
Very cool story… I am just wondering if you emailed the all girls colleges as well… and if so did they actually send you shirts?
Yes I did, and yes, they did.
Hi! I love this idea and was wondering how long/ what kind of things you said in your emails to accomplish such a task?
Hi, I was just wondering if you can sent me the list also. And email me about how you write your emails to the colleges. Thank you for this post!
ericake1@live.cn
Hi
Could you please send me the list too…. my email is ikhlaskhan107 @ yahoo.com

I’m so happy I stumbled across your story!! I’m a school counseling grad student, and I hope to work in the College and Career Center of a high school when I graduate. I have 39 shirts in my collection now but plan to start emailing schools soon. Thanks for sharing your story!
Should I start off with small colleges at first? And did they reply to the emails any of yall sent?
l’m a high school junior looking at universities that I might want to go to and your story made me more enthusiastic about browsing colleges. I do have one question, I’m I doing anything illegal if I attempt to do this?
No.
Hello
Do you still have that draft that you sent to those colleges? If you do, can you please give it to me,
Haven’t I given you enough?
I don’t really know what to write!
I am extremely interested in receiving some free apparel for my senior year! I would love it if anyone could send me the colleges that send out free stuff and advice on what to write in the emails. Please email me at mikaylathurman2014@yahoo.com 🙂

can u email me the list please
tjsweeney13@gmail.com
I’m using the link on his post
EMMANUEL COLLEGE said they couldn’t give me one ;(
This is time consuming but super fun. especially when you check the mail.
This is the coolest thing ever. I have started doing this today as I read your post yesterday. I am asking for them for my son. He is a sophomore and lives with his dad and they have four kids and one modest income. Thank you so very much..
I am posting again. My son received his first shirt Friday. Idk where it was from. He lives out of town but apparently this works. Instead of clicking on the link in the list of colleges, I open up a separate web page and google “college name admissions office” it brings up a list of of the college and related admissions pages. Most of the time you only have to go through one or two more like to find admissions email address
LMBO! I just came across your post, feeling shy I must admit, that I just sat here in my office and requested about a dozen free promotional pens after receiving a couple unsolicited via mail. I love t-shirts and this is hilarious!
This is amazing 😀
Could you please send me the list of your schools that you had?
Thanks!
raylo0408@hotmail.com
Around how many colleges replied back and did the send you an email or just sent the shirts?
Is there anyway you can also send me the list of colleges.
Thank you,
Jackie
Where’s the best place to get a list of all college admissions emails?
GUYS! There’s no list. You have to do the work, but it’s rewarding and super fun.
YES! Now that’s what I needed to hear! I enjoyed the originality of this project and the efforts put forth.
But it is so sad to read all those that “want that list”, “the email format”, etc. Why not do it yourselves people!? If you need to be spoon-fed, buy a shirt that says so .
Tyler Burns has done something inspiring and shared it here! I enjoyed reading this. I too collected Sweatshirts/T-shirts from Canadian Colleges and Universities. And I still enjoy them!
Yes, I emailed first, and most sent me one free of charge while a few asked me to pay the shipping costs.
But the efforts came from me and my emails were personal once I made contact, as I had a different reason for obtaining them besides just collecting College sweatshirts and Tees.
I’d love that list if anyone could get it to me!
leahrfvb28@yahoo.com
l have about 350 college t-shirts from 275 different schools that were mostly purchased from thrift stores.
Thank you for posting this. I’m going into high school so this is going to be a good way to get some college names into my head. Hoping for some successes 🙂
Is this still working ?
Hello can you please send me the list of colleges and email addresses that you used. In the last 2 hours, I have submitted an email to 35 colleges.
ivyia.lol97@yahoo.com
Hey how do you ask for a free shirt without being rude lol
Say you’re promoting
Please email me the list of colleges and email addresses to phoopwintkyaw@hotmail.com
Can anyone please email me the list of colleges that they recieved t-shirts or any other items from? dancingroxsxo@aol.com
Has anyone recently had success with this?

I wonder if this would work with businesses? Has anyone tried emailing businesses like coke or pepsi and offering to advertise for free if they send you a shirt?
my friend emailed a couple companies and they sent her stickers, I don’t know if that helps any
Do you know if you got more shirts from state schools or private schools?
definitely private!
I emailed about 100 schools around about half of them just keep sending me a link to their college store. Now what!
Whenever you go to send an email to a college, make sure they don’t have t-shirts on their website, a lot of the bigger ones do. Try to go for the smaller colleges, especially the colleges in the Midwest and northern portion of the East Coast.
You could have automated this entire process using VBA + Excel + Outlook. With some brief googling, it could take anyone less than a couple hours to do with no previous experience or about 15 minutes to do for the experienced users. Just in case you or anyone else wants to do this again in the future….
How would one go about doing this?
In case anyone is trying to do this, I found a pretty good list for Campus Admissions from SUNY schools:
http://www.suny.edu/attend/apply-to-suny/campus-admissions-offices/
Can anyone send me the schools from which they have received anything (T-shirts, sweatshirts, pens, hats, ANYTHING. etc) lol
Thanks in advance 🙂
Caridaniap@gmail.com
Has anyone recently tried this, if so, did it work?
I’ve only sent out about 12 emails and I’ve been responded to by two colleges so far, one saying that they couldn’t, and the other asking which sports I like best, so I’d say it sure works 🙂
Which school asked you about the sports?
Hi! I could have sworn I’ve visited this web site before but after browsing through some
of the posts I realized it’s new to me. Anyways, I’m definitely delighted I
discovered it and I’ll be book-marking it and checking back often!
I never seem to have any t-shirts, and I love getting college stuff. A lot of times, I’ll email colleges saying I’m interested just for the brochures and magnents and stuff. I had no idea if that if I asked for a shirt, I could get one. I am really going to try this. I hope it works 🙂
I, too, am going to try this! Thanks so much for all the info you provided, it was very helpful. In fact, your post inspired me to do this. I’ve been searching and searching for free t-shirts and when i stumbled upon this it was perfect being as I’m looking into colleges! Only, I dont know that I will e-mail as many as you did though. Never know though, I may really get into it! (:
I am really excited to try this is there anyway you could send me the URL your teacher gave you or at least a list of the schools. If you can that would be amazing. My email is
ajhowell95@gmail.com
Thanks
Also, it’s extremely easy but time consuming. Last night I went through and made a list of schools then googled “email to contact ‘TSU’ ” and they were poppin right up. I’m so excited to start this! I’ve sent about 30-40 emails out already!
Great Article. I will say that I imagine this article resulted in a huge influx of requests since I have not had luck with any of the schools I emailed. Most referenced a high of volume of similar requests and Michigan State directed me to a page on their alumni site solely dedicated to donating 20 bucks to receive “swag”. That being said I didn’t pull the lie about giving it to my classroom but instead for a cousin who is currently applying to colleges and is planning a reveal party of sorts (which is honest).
I love this post! It would be amazing if you could send me the list so I could try this my email is nikolehaberkorn3@gmail.com
Great Post!!! Could it be possible that you could send me the list? My email is kcolglazier54@gmail.com
That is awesome!! That’s the best thing I’ve read in a long time!!!
Hello! Is it still possible to do this? And if so, can you write the link for the website which listed the admissions e-mail addresses? Thanks a lot!
It’s definitely still possible. One thing that sucks is that we’re not going to find a website with a list of all the emails but here’s the quickest way I’m doing it if you haven’t started already. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the College Board website but that’s what I am using. I first found a list of colleges at http://colleges.findthebest.com. Then I open up the College Board website and type the name of the college. When the page loads you just click on the college and scroll down to the email. Copy, paste, send, then move on to the next. Good luck, so far I have gotten to 42 colleges. My request was denied by UCSD, University of Virginia, and Brown University so don’t try those. Stanford gives pennants and Pepperdine said yes. I only started yesterday so I’m waiting for the rest. My goal for each week is 100. Good luck.
Loyola University in Maryland, Cal-Tech, Northwestern University, University of Florida, Georgia-Tech, University of Georgia, Florida State, UCI, John Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon, Emory, Villanova, Stony Brook, and Baylor University all said no. So far there’s only no’s in my inbox.
Momouth, Towson, Vanderbilt, Drexel, University of Central Florida, Seattle Pacific, and the University of Tulsa also say no. Don’t try these.
Can you send me the list of college admission emails? Thank you!!
doors.stanford.edu/universities.html
Can I get a list of college admission emails too? Thanks.
I pay a quick visit every day some sites and information sites to
read posts, however this weblog gives quality based
content.
I work in a college admissions office and receive frequent requests for free T-shirts. It has always baffled me how similar the language is in these emails–now I know where they are getting the idea from! I think these offers to “promote my school” are absurd and annoying. Maybe large colleges don’t mind, but my school is unable to dole out free shirts to anyone who asks. I do admire your efforts; I like getting free things, too. It’s just a little annoying for some of us on the other end of this game.
Hi I see that you havent answerd but can anybody please tell me what they say to the colleges in their emails ive tried but have gotten nothing yet. Help!
Hey, just wondering what exactly did you say in your email to each college? I kinda wanna try this
Give them a purpose. He said it was a promotional effort. If you’re a student you could say something about your school not promoting enough college awareness. You tell them you’re interested in their college and you wonder if they would be willing to send you a shirt free of charge to help with getting students aware of the colleges out there. Give your mailing address somewhere in there, perhaps in the bottom. Don’t forget to thank them for at least considering it in the email. Good luck. You’re gonna have to try a lot for just a few shirts. Maybe 1 out of 7 will say yes.
Allegheny College said no.
My goodness at all the people begging for lists and what to say. Jesus christ people, can’t you do the work yourself? The man already gave you the golden idea. I did something similar to this before reading this post. My success rate was fairly high, emailed some 1500+ schools and got a return of 600+ shirts and TONS of “goodie” items: pennants, posters, pens, coozies, etc.
What’s the point of having a bunch of shirts from a bunch of colleges you care or know nothing about?!
Smaller schools have limited resources and these bogus requests are becoming a nuisance and a joke!
I implore all future readers of this blog to do a little research before sending these request and only request “swag” from schools you truly care about. It’s a waste of resources and will become a financial burden on future students.
You can calm down any time now.
I agree with you because I sent this email to only the colleges I applied to and some of the colleges where Ohio State and MSU which were suppose to send stuff according to this list but now they don’t.
There is one point that I dont agree with you and that is that these emails are annoying to receive but you do not know how much crap emails we receive from small colleges that flood our inbox. So if you receive a couple a emails a day asking for a free t-shirt you are lucky cuz we receive 100+ emails from random colleges everyday.
Aww, come on. Live a little.
Great article! I’m writing to the schools that send me information first (I don’t know how I got all these schools to email me?) to see if they’d be more willing to send me anything since they approached me as a potential student first.
I’m a member of my community college’s student government, and we order sooo many promotional items to give out… honestly, despite all these angry admission advisors commenting on your article… I’m sure a lot of colleges are happy to give things away. I know mine would be.
Hey, hope you get this… I am interested in doing this but wanted some advice/help? Just comment on this and we can figure out how to be in touch! Thanks!
It’s an amazing post for all the web users; they will get advantage from it I am sure.
Help I need help on this Tyler what do I say
Does this still work? I emailed a couple colleges and they all said no so far. Could someone reply with which colleges send stuff? Thanks in advance.
yes it has worked for me
I know it is 2014, I am a college advisor at a high school. May you send me the list of schools that sent you free t-shirts and accessories?
I want to decorate our new career center.
Email the list to jackie.calsoap@gmail.com
It’s 2015 happy new year and nobody has a list. well maybe someone does, but it’s hard work and nobody wants to just give it away. I’ve been emailing lately, you need to just do it too sorry
Hello there, You’ve done an incredible job. I’ll certainly digg it and personally recommend to my friends.
I’m sure they will be benefited from this site.
I have tried this and had some success. I am about part way thru, but I can let you know which ones I have had success with. I will even give you the letter I wrote to them, and what I received from each school and the e-mail addresses that I sent it to. I am willing to do this for a small fee. If you are interested, send $5 via paypal to viciousvixen2001@hotmail.com please include your e-mail address in the subject line, or if you don’t have paypal and want to pay another way, please e-mail me at that address and we can work something out.
I thought this was the coolest thing ever, such a great idea, so I decided to try it myself. I started a couple of days ago and I’ve probably emailed about 200 colleges so far. It has not been not enough for me to get any tshirts in the mail. I was wondering if you got any rejection emails when you did this? Most of the schools I have emailed haven’t responded, but the ones that have were all rejections saying that they do not send tshirts but they could send me an information packet. Thanks!
Did you get any t-shirts? and which ones?
I got about 50 tshirts in a month!! It works Thanks!!!
Any names of the Schools that sent you t-shirts Sadie? No need to include e-mail addresses, just to know which institutions seem happy to send them…Thanks!
Hey Tyler,
I just got done emailing every school on the list within a week and am just starting to receive shirts. Can you tell me more about what you did the second time you emailed colleges? Did you use the same address and message?
Thanks
Which ones send out free t-shirts?
I was wondering specifically who you send these emails to? Do you just send them to the default admissions email address or is their a specific place in admissions these should be sent to?
Your alma mater Ball State said they would send one. So that’s cool
Ball State said no to me. Any other colleges sent you free t-shirts?
Sorry guys, admission counselors–at least the experienced ones–have caught on to these emails. As an admission counselor, I don’t recall the last time I sent a t-shirt to a student who a) hasn’t visited campus, or b) hasn’t been admitted. I get 2-10 of these email requests per week. If you are legitimately interested in a college, I recommend not sending a blanket email like this. We certainly don’t take these requests seriously, and occasionally they don’t reflect well on the student. Kudos to Tyler for thinking to try it and actually pulling it off so long ago!
Actually, I tried doing this recently. I emailed a lot of colleges that I was actually interested in, not just a bunch of random ones. I can assure you that some of them do take it seriously. I got multiple t-shirts, pennants, and other accessories from colleges across the county, and the free stuff is not one sided. Most of schools that send stuff are smaller schools that most people have never heard of unless they live near them. If someone has never heard of the college that my shirt is from, they will remember it and likely want to learn more about it. It is a great way to get students that might live across the country informed of great schools that they’ve never heard of. I love wearing the t-shirts I have received and showing off the schools that sent them to me. You never know if you don’t try, right?
What colleges did you get free shirts from amp?
Wait, did they pay shipping O_O
did u get any?
l now have close to 500 shirts, with 350 colleges represented. I am shooting for your 1,000.
Which colleges? I didn’t even get one.
Is there any way you could email me what you sent to the colleges? lvaldrich@aol.com
can someone send me a list as well
daniel.pjc@outlook.com
Just an FYI, it probably isn’t a good idea to email colleges and universities during the admissions season, since they are probably working through more emails than normal, and have fewer extra freebies than another season, ie. fall. I was shot down by about 40 colleges, and many said that they were running out of printed pamphlets as well as normal memorabilia.
I was wondering if you could email me the word document you used?
I don’t know who you are, but I think your comment responses are basically amazing. such an inspiration to my personal sense of sarcasm
*sheds tear*
I would love to have that list as well! Email me! alan.haynes@yahoo.com
Okay well it’s 12 years since you did this and it’s not working very well… LOL
you never said where the list of collage emails was.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, no one is going to send you a list of colleges that will send you stuff or let you use their letter!! Try it yourself!! I have personally done this and it is a lot of work. I am not through all of the colleges, and I have been emailing some everyday for months! This post was not intended to give you everything you need to do this, it was to share a story. He told you the basics of how he did it in case you wanted to try it, but hell do some work for yourself.
A few summers ago I decided to follow in Tyler Burns’ footsteps and email every college. Over those few weeks, I experienced incredible success and received well over a hundred t-shirts. To help out all of you who have questions or want to hear my story, I created my own website! Visit the site sometime at ww.freecollegeshirts.com!
Stewart’s website was really good! Check it out! http://www.freecollegeshirts.com!
This idea is incredible! Wow! Good job Tyler and Stewart!
I got great success from Ohio State University.
Comment below where you got free shirts from.
I started last night and I have a Wartburg shirt in the mail for me!
I got one from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
I also gt some from Michigan State University and University of Michigan- Ann Arbor.
Try Columbia College in SC.
Tyler, you are a legend.
Did you get any?

Hi, I’m trying this same method as you did, but I’m not sure what I should say in my email. Any advice?
You can definitely see your skills in the work you write.
The sector hopes for even more passionate writers such as you who
aren’t afraid to say how they believe. All the time go after your heart.
Hi, I was wondering how you would phrase the email, not completely sure how word it for mass amounts of colleges. Much thanks!
What is the link that your teacher gave you that has the list of schools?
Do you put your address in the original email or wait for them to reply?
Alright time for me to get in on this. I started my process 2 days ago and have sent 100 colleges an email now. Basically all I did was say I would help promote them if they would send me some kind of apparel. So far 2 schools have said yes and something is in the mail and 10 have said no. I’ll keep an update
So far UChicago and Louisiana Tech have said they’re sending me something. Alaska-Fairbanks, Alverno, Cornell, Dartmouth, Greensboro, Lorus, LSU, Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington have said no.
Update: I’ve emailed 630 colleges. Today mail started to roll in with items from UChicago, TCU, Washburn university and Hiram College
Hey Adam, do you mind sending me a list? I would really appreciate it! Please email me at ethanlewis99@gmail.com. Thanks again, mate!
I’m working on college shirt quilts do you mind emailing the lost
Hannascollegelife99@gmail.com
Can you email me the list too?
I love this idea! I’m actually a senior in High School right now and would love to get some free college “swag” as some call it. Hearing how successful your attempt was, definitely influences me to embark on this challenge as well. I was just curious how to go about writing the colleges, like what to say. You said that you mentioned how you’re a perspective college students and would love to promote their college. Is that basically it? I would love for this to be successful in my attempt to and would love any help I could get. Thanks!:)
So what happen? Did you get anything?
I’m still compiling an email list of colleges and trying to think of how exactly to word it, in the nicest way possible. I’ll update on my progress though!
Awesome! So far I been emailing five colleges a day. Hiram College, BYU Hawaii, and Oberlin College are going to send me something.
what are you asking in the email??
Did you tell them your address on the email? or did they ask for it in a reply email?
What colleges gave you sweat shirts
I admire the fact that you took time to get all the emails down and was wondering if you could send me your list. Kamera tembus pandang

So did you include your address in the email? Or did you wait for them to reply first?
Hi! This was an amazing article, I really enjoyed reading it. Did you by any chance tell the colleges your home address to receive the shirts? Just how would I go about doing that without seeming demanding?
How is this going for everybody? List your updates below!
This is awesome!! I’ve recently emailed about 60-70 colleges. So far I’ve received 6 t-shirts, 1 long sleeve shirt, an ID holder and a bunch of pennants within a couple of weeks 🙂
which schools sent you a tshirt?
Hello. As someone that works in college admissions…I want to punch you. Half-kidding, but mostly serious.
Haha, sorry if my post has been a nuisance for you. Just out of curiosity, how many requests from people would you say you’ve gotten over the years? Monthly/weekly/daily?

Hey Tyler, I loved this and thank you so much I really want to do this. Can you give me the url to that site with the admissions emails.
Thanks man keep up the good work!!
This is the right site for anyone who wishes to find out about this topic. You realize a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally would want to…HaHa). You certainly put a fresh spin on a topic that has been written about for a long time. Wonderful stuff, just excellent!
Hello my family member! I wish to say that this article is awesome, great written and come with almost all significant infos. I would like to see more posts like this .
What exactly did you ask these colleges in the email that you sent them?
Thank You for this idea. I love free stuff and this is a great way to get it. Here is the email I emailed:
Dear University name,
My name is Name (First and Last). I am currently looking and searching for a place to spend my college years. I was wondering if I could get some information from your school and possibly a free t-shirt or some cool promotional gear to show other students at my high school about your college.
Thanks
Name (First and Last)
Address
Where are you finding the university’s email addresses? I cant seem to find any, I have scanned many college websites but all I can find is phone numbers and mailing addresses! Please respond.
you click contact at the bottom usually or admissions half the time it as admission@whatevercollege.edu
Can you send me the link please
People asking for a link or URL to the list of college emails, there isn’t. You have to look up each schools individual admissions emails. It’s a little bit of work but I ended up getting around 50 tshirts, 50 pennants, 50 pens and some other cool stuff after emailing 600 colleges looking up all of their emails on their websites. No I will not send a list of colleges I emailed, that’s for you to do. It takes time and effort, but totally worth it. Just some advice, smaller schools are more willing to send promotional items rather than large universities.
what colleges did you receive shirts from? lmk thank you!
http://collegeapps.about.com/od/choosingacollege/a/CollegeProfiles.htm The much desired “list” your welcome and happy admissions@edu emailing for hours upon hours Big schools are cheap asses btw
http://collegeapps.about.com/od/choosingacollege/a/CollegeProfiles.htm here is a list of colleges a to z Admissions Guy
Wow great story! I wish I knew this sooner in my high school career so I can advertise for the school if they sent me a tshirt. Also im drafting my own email to only the colleges i applied to but was wondering if i should include that i was accepted in the email or if that would actually hurt my chances of getting a shirt
When you emailed these colleges, did you include your address?
LOL. This is great; sometimes my internet A.D.D. really pays off. I was genuinely trying to get a t shirt from a school I want to go to because their name sounds so much more awesome than what the school really is, and they don’t have any shirts :.( But the search is totally justified now because I found this.

Yes hi! Does someone mind helping me and sending the email that they sent to the college. I know I might sound greedy and lazy, sorry for that but I’m in a rush and would really like some help!! Thank u!😊
I would like to request free college t-shirts from any college. I collect t shirts. Size x-large. Thanks n God Bless.
University of Chicago will definitely send something if you ask. I don’t if it’s a T-Shirt yet, but heres to hoping.
Sent 55 emails my first day. About 15 responded the next day. Reward was 2-3 shirts, a promise of a shirt if I visited, a informational packet, and materials.
Got my first shirt today from Paul Smith’s College
Never gave any indication they were sending anything
So truly a surprise when I checked the mail, not expecting a shirt for another week or two from other colleges
What schools you get shirts from so far?
University of Chicago, Paul Smith’s College, Oakland University, Grace College, South Seattle College, Alma College, etc.
I have received 21 shirts so far
I have sent between 600-700 emails.
ive got stuff from them. What’s the rest of the colleges?
Superb blog! Do you have any helpful hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any ideas? Appreciate it!
That is really interesting, You’re a very skilled blogger. I have joined your feed and look forward to in quest of extra of your fantastic post. Additionally, I have shared your website in my social networks
Hey there superb website! Does running a blog similar to this require a massive amount work? I have virtually no understanding of computer programming however I had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future. Anyhow, should you have any ideas or tips for new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject nevertheless I just wanted to ask. Kudos!
whoah this blog is wonderful i like reading your posts. Keep up the great work! You already know, a lot of people are searching round for this information, you can aid them greatly.
Emailed 110 colleges in the past day. 2 said they would be happy to send me a shirt and a few (maybe 10) said that that they don’t have enough to send out to anyone who asks, but would give me one if I visited. Got one VERY sassy email from a college about “free t shirt blog posts.” I’ll keep y’all updated.
I would love. To have some pamphlets from your colleague or even a hoddie
hey i was wondering if you could send me the list of emails you used
It is in reality a nice and useful piece of info. I am satisfied that you shared this useful info with us. Please keep us informed like this. Thanks for sharing.
What did your message to them say.
Wow! This could be one particular of the most helpful blogs We’ve ever arrive across on this subject. Basically Magnificent. I am also a specialist in this topic so I can understand your effort.
Hi Tyler, I was wanting to experiment this but I am not really sure what to say. Could you help me out by what I should say in the email? Thank you!
Dose anyone have a list of the emails ?
I want to show some thanks to you just for rescuing me from this crisis. Just after checking throughout the world-wide-web and seeing basics that were not productive, I was thinking my entire life was well over. Living without the presence of answers to the problems you have resolved by way of your good site is a critical case, as well as those that might have in a negative way damaged my career if I hadn’t discovered your web page. Your own competence and kindness in playing with the whole thing was tremendous. I am not sure what I would’ve done if I had not come upon such a solution like this. It’s possible to at this moment look forward to my future. Thanks a lot very much for this high quality and amazing guide. I won’t be reluctant to suggest your web page to anyone who would like guide on this situation.
I have never threw up in my liffe!!!!! BOOOO YAAA!

A lot of stuff to take into consideration. There are certainly a lot of stuff to take into consideration. I am bored to death at work so I decided to browse your article on my iphone during lunch break. Are there other websites you work on?
My neighbor is trying to learn more on this field. Your article really maked me think. I enjoyed reading what you had to say. Your blog has a kind of engergy surrounding it.
This is an excellent, an eye-opener for sure! Your article has proven super useful to me. Fantastic blog! Colors seem brighter when you are around. Incredible!
I want to do this but I can’t seem to find any emails online..can you help me out with that?
I recently received a message from a teacher looking to collect t-shirts for his students. Perhaps you have some you would like to donate. I am trying to find a way to buy in bulk and came across your article. I thought you might be able to help me with this. Please contact me if you can
In the meantime, this is what he wrote to me:
We would be happy with t-shirts that you could manage. We have about 130 avid students (sizes Small to Adult Large 6th 7th and 8th Grades). We are organizing “College Day” once a month and ask the AVID students and all of our faculty to wear college T shirts.
We are a title 1 school with about 85-90 percent of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. We have about 60 students who are homeless. Many of the students had at least one college T Shirt but many did not and do not have the resources to by one.
We are in the process of collecting new or gently used shirts from the faculty and community. No contribution would be too big or small. We hope to start our college days in November, but would accept donations anytime.

Thanks for the thoughts you have provided here. Furthermore, I believe there are numerous factors which keep your automobile insurance premium all the way down. One is, to take into consideration buying vehicles that are inside the good directory of car insurance companies. Cars that are expensive tend to be more at risk of being robbed. Aside from that insurance coverage is also good value of your car, so the more costly it is, then higher your premium you make payment for.
